City receives KDOT funding for I-35 and Gardner Road project
The City of Gardner announced today that the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) granted funding for improvements to the interchange at I-35 and Gardner Road.
The funding will cover the first and second phase of the project. KDOT will provide $3.925M for phase 1, which consists of the realignment of 191st Street west of Gardner Road and signalization of the intersection ramps. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2019. An additional $6M will be granted for phase 2 for the replacement of the existing Gardner Road bridge over I-35 with construction starting in 2022.
KDOT is currently designing a diverging diamond interchange for this area, an emerging concept in roadway design that aims to eliminate left-hand turns into oncoming traffic and thereby increase safety. An engineering analysis, as well as input from the public, helped determine this direction.
