Gardner names new city administrator

Post Date:04/16/2019 4:27 AM
The City of Gardner has named Police Chief Jim Pruetting as its next city administrator. During Monday night's city council meeting, council members voted to appoint Pruetting to the position, effective April 29.
Pruetting holds a master's degree in management and brings 25 years of managerial experience to his new role. His vast professional background includes strategic planning, municipal law and regulations, operational and budget management, program development, community engagement, human resources management, training, and organizational and policy development.
The city hired the League of Kansas Municipalities to facilitate the candidate search and accepted 40+ applications for the job. A panel made up of community representatives and city leadership interviewed seven candidates. Three candidates advanced, participating in a community meet and greet and a final interview with the Governing Body. The finalists also had an opportunity to interact with department heads and managers.
"Jim's strong leadership skills, comprehensive knowledge of municipal services and positive community relationships made him a top candidate for the position," said Mayor Steve Shute. "But what distinguished him the most from the other finalists was the overall support for Jim from the community and city leadership staff."
Prior to joining the city in 2015, Pruetting worked for the Kansas City Police Department, serving in various high-level positions. He retired from the department after 31 years of service.
"Jim is an incredible talent with proven success in every role he has worked in," Shute added. "We are confident in Jim's ability to move the community forward while maintaining an organizational culture of teamwork, trust and transparency."
Pruetting will be replacing Interim City Administrator Laura Gourley after she retires on April 26. Captain Jay Belcher will serve as interim police chief.
