Project location: I-35 & Gardner Road Interchange
Future Improvements: The City, along with KDOT and its design consultant, has completed preliminary design for the ultimate improvements to the I-35 and Gardner Road interchange. The recommended interchange is a diverging diamond, which is similar to the existing interchange at I-35 and Homestead. A preliminary layout of the future interchange can be seen here. KDOT is currently working on the final design of the interchange. At this time there is no funding in place for construction and no schedule set.
Phase 1 Improvements: The first phase of the project is currently being designed. The work is primarily centered around relocating 191st Street to tie into the existing intersection at 188th Street and Gardner Road (see map). The project will also include a permanent traffic signal at 188th Street and Gardner Road and temporary signals at the I-35 ramp intersections. Construction is expected to begin in late 2019 and be completed in late 2020.
Phase 2 Improvements: The City has obtained funding from KDOT to replace the existing Gardner Road bridge over I-35. KDOT will be performing the design with construction expected to begin in 2022.
