The Center Street and Main Street Intersection project will provide additional turn lanes and signal modifications at this intersection in the heart of Gardner. The project’s primary purpose is to improve safety and relieve congestion. Dedicated left-turn lanes will be added on both approaches to the intersection on Main Street. Traffic will be maintained throughout construction as well as access to all adjacent properties.
Construction of this project is funded by the Kansas Department of Transportation. The City of Gardner is responsible for funding the engineering design, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation, and construction observation.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2013 and should be completed by the fall of 2013.
For more information, please contact City Engineer Tim McEldowney (tmceldowney @gardnerkansas.gov) at 913-856-0959; or Project Engineer Mark Pottinger (mpottinger @gardnerkansas.gov) at 913-856-0918.
City staff have prepared construction plans to fill in the gaps in the sidewalks along Main Street/U.S. 56 Highway, between Walgreens and Gardner National Bank on the north side; and between KFC and the existing sidewalk just west of Moonlight Road on the south side. This project will consist of apprximately 800 linear feet of 5' wide sidewalks, 2 sidewalk ramps, grading, seeding, and miscellaneous appurtenant items. The project is expected to begin approximately June 4, with completion projected for mid-June.
City staff will prepare construction plans to remove the curves and straighten W. 167th Street, just west of Waverly Road. This work should begin late summer, with completion projected for early fall.
This project is located on W. 159th Street, 1000' east of Kill Creek Road. The City is currently designing replacement guardrails for the box culvert at Kill Creek. This project will be approximately 500' long, consisting primarily of guardrails, grading, and seeding. Construction is expected to begin in July.
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) partnered with Douglas and Johnson Counties, the cities of Baldwin City, Edgerton, and Gardner, and the Mid-America Regional Council to begin a 15-month Corridor Management Plan, profiled on a new plan web site, www.us56corridorplan.org. The project web site tracks community response to issues/concerns/needs and provides updated information, overall plan schedule, and related plan documents.
The corridor planning process began in February 2009. The Corridor plan's purpose is to improve access management and capacity along U.S. 56 Highway in a way that supports the needs and addresses the concerns of the Corridor communities. To help determine those needs and concerns, the web site will feature a "Community Question" that will change during each of the plan's three phases.
In addition, a public opinion survey of Corridor residents was administered by ETC Institute in April 2009. The survey results, which have a high level of accuracy, are available on the project web site. Over 80% of the survey respondents indicated they felt either "very safe" or "somewhate safe" driving the U.S. 56 Highway Corridor. A large majority (73%) thought that the proposed BNSF Intermodal Facility near Gardner would result in a major increase in truck traffic, but about the same percentage (70%) thought that the Intermodal Facility would have a positive effect on the economy of the U.S. 56 Highway Corridor. Other survey results that can be viewed on the web site include frequency of travel, perception of travel speeds, bicycle, pedestrian and transit, Corridor identity and image, land use, water and sewer issues.
* identify flood prone areas and explore solutions,
* reevaluate stream buffers to protect stream corridors,
* update stormwater policies,
* develop plan review tools for staff reviews,
* prepare for upcoming federal requirements,
* identify alternate stormwater funding resources,
* compile data and recommendations into a single source of stormwater priorities.
This Master Plan will be used by City staff as a design tool when reviewing proposed developments and to make more informed decisions and recommendations related to stormwater management.
