Public Safety Administration

Public Safety is a combination of police, fire and medical services provided to the residents of Gardner by one entity.  The Public Safety Department has one Director who heads all three aspects of the Public Safety Department.  One Captain oversees the daily operations of the Administration Division.  The Public Safety Department is unique in its concept and only a few cities have this type of concept in the Greater Kansas City area.  Several areas fall under the Public Safety concept.

Patrol Division

The patrol division is commonly referred to as the Police Division.  It consists of Sergeants who oversee the Public Safety Officers in the day to day operations of the Patrol Division.  Patrol consists of officers responding to calls for services that typically involve Police related issues.  All the Public Safety Officers are sent to the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson Kansas and complete the state requirements to serve as a police officer within the State of Kansas.

Fire/Medical Division

The fire and medical division is commonly referred to as the Fire and EMS Division.  It consists of a Captain who oversees the daily operations of the Fire/EMS Division.  The Fire/Medical Division respond to calls for service requiring the Fire Department such as fire alarm calls and requests for medical personnel. A station officer is assigned to the Fire Division at all times and is responsible for the initial response to a Fire or Medical emergency.  Fire training is provided to all Public Safety Officers, along with First Responder training, due to all Public Safety Officers being required to perform in all three aspects within the Public Safety Division.

Investigations Division

The investigations unit at this time is staffed with one full time detective to investigate any felonies that occur within our jurisdiction.  Patrol officers are usually assigned to investigate any misdemeanors.  All major cases, sex crime and internet fraud cases are forwarded to the Johnson County Sheriffs Department for further investigation due to the extensive investigation that is needed in these types of cases.

DARE

Gardner Department of Safety is involved in the nationally known DARE program and one officer is assigned to this program.  The program is taught to all 5th grade classes. The program consists of 300 students with twelve classes of 5th graders taught.  The concept of the DARE program is to teach children to resist the pressures of illegal drugs, tobacco and alcohol.  The program is taught in the spring semester of the school year and graduation is held in the month of May.  The program has appeared to be successful in our City and will continue to be taught even though other cities have discontinued the program.

Animal Control

The public safety department has recently developed an animal control unit consisting of one full time animal control officer.  The animal control officer is available Monday-Friday from 8:00AM-4:00PM.  When the animal control officer is not available patrol officers continue to respond to calls for service involving any animals.  The animal control officer can assist in any questions that you may have involving any animal issues and has attended a specialized school regarding animal control procedures.
