Public Safety General Information

Public Safety Services

The Public Safety concept is unique to Gardner.  All of our full time personnel are cross-trained in the areas of Law Enforcement, Firefighting and Emergency Medical services to provide 24-hour service and response to the citizens.  Regardless of your emergency, equipment is carried in the patrol cars by our Public Safety Officers to assist you when they arrive on the scene.  Johnson County Med-Act provides Advance Life Support services to Gardner.

In addition to the day-to-day operations there are a few other services that the Public Safety Department provides to its citizens:

  • Residential checks on your home when you are on vacation or out of town.
  • Residential fire inspections for home daycare facilities.
  • Fingerprint identification for both job placement and I-Dent-A-Kid fingerprinting for children.
  • Two School Resource Officers for the USD 231 school district.
  • The D.A.R.E. program is taught to the 5th grade students each year.
  • Tours of the Public Safety Facility.
  • Safety talks to school classrooms, daycare facilities, businesses and civic groups.
  • Static displays of the Public Safety patrol cars and fire apparatus for neighborhood block parties.

Tornado Warning System

The City of Gardner has five state-of-the-art storm warning sirens. The Johnson County Emergency Management Department tests the sirens on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:00 a.m. These sirens are an outdoor warning system and are not meant to be heard inside your home or in your basement.

If an actual tornado emergency is in effect in Gardner, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) will have officers in patrol cars using their vehicle sirens to help warn residents. DPS encourages every resident to invest in an early warning weather station. These weather stations are available at a discount price of $39.95 at Price Chopper on Main Street. For further information regarding tornado preparedness visit www.noaa.org..

Soliciting

Door-to-door soliciting is prohibited except by permit from the Public Safety Department. An annual fee of $25 or a one day only permit for $5 is required. The public is urged to check the permit of anyone selling door to door. Contact Public Safety with any problems.

There are many other services that the Public Safety Department provides. If you have any questions, concerns or are in need of any of our services, please do not hesitate to contact the Public Safety Department for assistance at 856-7312.
