Volunteer & Reserve Program

The Fire Volunteer and Public Safety Reserve Program has a long history with the City of Gardner. We are very proud of our citizens who join these groups to assist us in the protection of the City.  The City's reserve and volunteer firefighter personnel come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.  Many are firefighters from other agencies, insurance executives, Med-Act command personnel, etc..

If either the Volunteer Firefighter or Public Safety Reserve Officer positions interest you, please contact the Public Safety Department to apply.  Applications can be mailed to the Gardner Department of Public Safety (DPS) at 440 E. Main, Gardner Kansas 66030 or can be delivered in person at the DPS Monday-Friday from 8:00AM-5:00PM.  Applications are linked below for each position and can be downloaded for completion.

Firefighter Volunteer Program

The Fire Volunteers apply to the Department and are then interviewed about what they might be able to contribute to our services.  Upon appointment, volunteers are issued fire equipment, notification systems for fire alerts, and enter into a training program that is held two nights a month on the first and third Wednesdays of the month.  In this training program, they learn the fire standards and are then tested on the standards learned.  Upon completion of the standards, they may then respond to fire scenes and do as directed by the fire incident commander on scene.

Public Safety Reserve Program

The Public Safety Reserve Program application process works the same way as the Fire Volunteer Program but, because they will have policing powers, the reserve applicant must undergo a significant background investigation prior to appointment.  These persons also receive both formal and on the job training.  Reserves ride in patrol units with seasoned officers and also assist with such things as court bali ff duties and assisting at accident scenes.  Reserve officers also assist with duties for the Johnson County Fair and Parade each August.
