Wastewater Collections

The Line Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining the sanitary sewer collection system which collects and delivers wastewater to the Wastewater Treatment Plants for treatment.

The Line Maintenance Division maintains approximately 95 miles of gravity and forced sewer mains and approximately 3,500 manholes. The City's 18 lift stations are maintained by the Wastewater Treatment Division. The sewer lines are constructed of vitrified clay pipe, PVC truss pipe and SDR pipe. The pipes range in size from 8 inches to 30 inches in diameter.

Contractors are hired where depths of sewer is beyond the reach of the City’s backhoes or where time is the overriding factor.

The Line Maintenance Division cleans 100% of the City-owned sewer lines on an annual basis, as part of the sewer cleaning program, which has paid off in preventing or reducing sewer main backups.

Why do sewers back up?

Anything that blocks the pipe can cause the sewer to back up. Tree roots, clothing, plastics, diapers, abnormal debris, any cooking grease can all accumulate and block the flow of the sewer. Be wise; make sure what you flush or drain in the sewer does not cause it to block. For more information, please see Sewer Backups.

To report sewer issues, please email or call Public Works at 913-856-0914, 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday.  If you have a sewer emergency outside of business hours, please call 913-856-6802.
