The Public Works Department oversees multiple construction, maintenance, and repair projects.  These projects serve to update, rehabilitate, and maintain the City's infrastructure and facilities.

Santa Fe, Waverly to Poplar

The area around the Santa Fe and Waverly intersection has experienced flooding numerous times in recent years. This project will provide significant improvements to the drainage in and around the intersection. In addition, Santa Fe will be widened to three lanes and will include a trail on the north side, a sidewalk on the south side, curb and gutter, and street lighting. The Waverly intersection will be built out to include left turn lanes and a right turn lane for westbound traffic. A traffic signal is not warranted at this time.

Waverly, US-56 to Madison

This project will widen Waverly Road to 3 lanes. The project limits are from just south of Santa Fe to just north of Madison and will include the build-out of the intersection at Madison. The primary aspects of the project include a trail on the east side of Waverly, a sidewalk on the west side, curb and gutter, and street lighting.

Cedar Niles and US-56 intersection

 The City is in the process of improving traffic flow at this intersection. The primary improvements will be on the south leg of the intersection. Today there is a single thru/left-turn lane and two right-turn lanes. The proposed configuration will provide two dedicated left-turn lanes, one thru-lane, and two dedicated right-turn lanes. The traffic signals will also be modified to accommodate the new lane configurations.

Moonlight and Madison signal

 Increase in traffic volumes in this area have resulted in the need for a traffic signal to be installed at the intersection of Moonlight and Madison. The project will also include ADA improvements as needed at the intersection.

Moonlight Road Safe Routes to Schools 

This project will improve existing sidewalks and fill in missing segments of sidewalk and trail along Moonlight Road between Warren Street and White Drive.

I-35 & Gardner Road Interchange

  • Future Improvements: The City, along with KDOT and its design consultant, has completed preliminary design for the ultimate improvements to the I-35 and Gardner Road interchange. The recommended interchange is a diverging diamond, which is similar to the existing interchange at I-35 and Homestead. A preliminary layout of the future interchange can be seen here. KDOT is currently working on the final design of the interchange. At this time there is no funding in place for construction and no schedule set.
  •  Phase 1 Improvements: The first phase of the project is currently being designed.  The work is primarily centered around relocating 191st Street to tie into the existing intersection at 188th Street and Gardner Road  (see map).   The project will also include a permanent traffic signal at 188th Street and Gardner Road and temporary signals at the I-35 ramp intersections.  Construction is expected to begin in mid 2020 and be completed in late 2020.  
  • Phase 2 Improvements: The City has obtained funding from KDOT to replace the existing Gardner Road bridge over I-35. KDOT will be performing the design with construction expected to begin in 2022.

2020 Pavement Management Program for Street Treatment

The city will continue working on curb replacement through March as a part of its 10-year pavement management program to preserve and enhance the city's street network.  Mill/overlay, and chip seal/fog seal preservation treatments should begin shortly afterwards.   See a map of this year's project.  Residents living along the streets receiving treatment will be given a 24-hour notice via door hangar, requesting vehicles to be moved.
